Magic Trick by L’Atelier Reflexe & Cobertura Photo

Location: Tobacco Warehouse

A Polaroid collection presented by L’Atelier Reflexe ( France ) and Cobertura photo ( Spain )

Curated by : Véronique Bourgoin

Magic Trick is a collection of Polaroid pictures gathered by Véronique Bourgoin, a French artist and director of l’Atelier Reflexe, founded in 1994 in Montreuil-Sous-Bois (Paris). This collection shows a selection of pictures taken by European photographers who use Polaroid not as a specialty, but as a way to experiment through a unique and instant medium. It comprises works by experienced artists as well as anonymous photographs. It also presents pictures taken by young French and Spanish photographers selected by l’Atelier Reflexe and Cobertura Photo, art institutes which support young photographers throughout the world.

At a time when digital techniques have set new standards both in amateur and professional photography, allowing photographers to gather a large number of pictures through virtual storage and print them almost instantaneously at home, one cannot help comparing these techniques with Polaroid. The latter can be considered both as the mould and the opposite of the former. It has a unique character and a raw quality revealed by the artist’s hands. The intimacy, the magic and the uniqueness of this process, which brutally captures moments and fix them in a suspended spacetime between past and future, gives a poetic and timeless quality to the work thus created, often beyond the conjuror’s will. This collection, presented as a cabinet of curiosities, mixes together different visions of artists and unknowns in order to offer an overview of the present use of Polaroid, in the artistic as well as in the amateur field.

Location: Tobacco Warehouse

EYEMAZINGPaintings by Kimiko Yoshida. Kimiko Yoshida is one of the most refreshing artists of our time. Her new series Paintings is a follow-up to her series Mariees that she initiated in the year 2000. In Paintings Yoshida presents herself as one on a journey, immersed in the infinity of colour. She transforms the art of the masters Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Rubens, and Brueghel, to create new paintings but without the use of paint. This exhibition is not only a celebration of Yoshida as a gorgeous and innovative artist but of Yoshida as a sublime and talented painter.

American YouthRedux Pictures

Location: Tobacco Warehouse

This companion exhibition to the 240-page American Youth book examines the newest generation of 18-24 year olds in detail, observing young couples and Mormon missionaries, debutante balls and drunken tailgate stupors, war widows and B-boys, street kids and lobstermen. How are they different, and how are they exactly the same as the generations that came before? There are would-be pop stars waiting for a shot on American Idol, organic farmers living the hippie dream and tattooed Cobra gang members brooding in a Navajo Reservation jail. Another series of photographs asks young New Yorkers to think big: If you had the chance, what question would you ask God?

Edited with the help of Bill Black (Reader’s Digest), Karen Frank (Conde Nast Portfolio), Jeanne Graves (BestLife), Armin Harris (Fortune), Katherine Harris (The Daily Beast), Jane Hwang (ABCNews.com), Michelle Jackson (freelance art buyer, owner of SnapIndigo), Nadja Masri (GEO), Brenda Milis (Men’s Health), Bruce Perez (Redbook), Dora Somosi (GQ) and Allyson Torrisi (Popular Mechanics).
